SUSTAINABLE LIVING COMPLEX

CONCEPT

CASA IKIRU

A sustainable and modular living complex built to rekindle the symbiotic relationship between Humans and Nature by reintroducing our natural environment to our Urban setting.

CORE PURPOSE

CASA IKIRU is designed to create a personal connection to nature, to inspire us to create a world where the environment doesn’t need protecting because it is an integral part of who and what we are. After a two week journey in Costa Rica, I had the opportunity to study nature in many scales and develop a sustainable housing project inspired by the bio-diverse environment.

COSTA RICA  I  RESEARCH TRIP

For two weeks I was immersed in the rich ecological biodiversity of the Costa Rica,
learning natural biological forms and symbiotic relationships between living organisms. Inspired by the natural world, international student teams used biomimicry to design sustainable spaces, material innovations, furnishing and experiences to forge new connections to nature and paradigms of how humans live, work and play

DESIGN STRATEGY

A pattern was designed that could be repeated endlessly and seamlessly for the Living pods. This pattern bio-mimics the hexagonal structure of a honeycomb, however, it has been adjusted to accommodate diverse living situations. The overall structure was designed to hole a single pod unit, double pod unit, and a family pod unit.
